A contingent of yellow-shirt-clad Unitarian Universalists will be heading down to the National Mall in Washington, DC for the “Reason Rally” on March 24, 2012, from 10:00AM – 4:00PM. According to Joyce Dowling, the rally’s Unitarian Universalist participants plan to stand in solidarity with the secular movement while sharing the Standing on the Side of Love message. All UU attendees are encouraged to wear their yellow “Standing on the Side of Love” gear. UUs believe in the separation of church and state, as secularists do. UUs should be in good company–after all, many secular non-theists to try to live a compassionate life as outlined in Karen Armstrong’s book, 12 Steps to a Compassionate Life, which is admired by many UUs.
The rally will demonstrate that there is no one “True Atheist.” Participants will be non-theists from all political persuasions, ethnicities, genders, and backgrounds–showing that there are secular Americans in every demographic. Organizers are also calling for legislative equality saying, “Secular Americans can run for office and adequately represent theists, just as theists in office can represent their secular constituents proudly and openly. We deserve a seat at the table just like theists, and we hope this rally can put our values on the radar of American voters.”
The Reason Rally is a free event that will include music, comedy, great speakers, and lots of fun. Celebrity participants include Richard Dawkins, Mythbusters‘ Adam Savage, PZ Myers, Taslima Nasrin, James Randi, Greta Christina, Jamila Bey, Tim Minchin, and Bad Religion.
